Why Earn Your Minor in Film & Television at Sacred Heart?

Master the art of storytelling in our dynamic and close-knit program. Work in fiction, documentary, web based and/or VR/AR/XR formats. The film and television minor at Sacred Heart University is devoted to cinematic storytelling across all platforms. Our program offers dynamic courses that guide students as they work collaboratively to create independent projects, supplemented by frequent master classes and workshops. Focusing on story and hands-on production, students learn the craft and techniques that empower them to stand out in today’s media market.

Our Philosophy

Required Courses | 18 Credits

Introduction to media technology, examining the impact of radio, television, newspapers, still photography, film, and the computer on the human condition. Trains the student to be a perceptive consumer of contemporary mass media by exploring how each medium codifies reality. Readings, screenings, and written assignments required.

Introduction to a wide ranging study of multimedia production. Students will learn audio and video production techniques and create media for online distribution.

A study of the language of moving pictures. Unlike the linear sequence of speech and the written word, moving pictures create a simultaneity of sensory perception. Through an intensive study of experimental and feature films, this course explores the nature of the moving images and how they are organized to create a whole.

This course expands on CM 101 with extensive examination of theories of media effects on behavior, values, and social/political structures, with an emphasis on contemporary media and the consequences of the shift to an online digital environment.
Prerequisite: Take CM-101 or MS-101;

Choose One

Introduction to the historical development of filmmaking from 1895 to 1945, highlighting the evolution of the film as a means of expression. Films from the past are shown at each class meeting followed by a discussion of several aspects of the film.
Prerequisite: Take CM 101 or MS 101

This course covers the history of motion pictures from 1945 to 1975, including extensive screening of classic films. Readings, screenings, and written assignments required. May be taken out of sequence.
Prerequisite: Take CM-101 or MS-101;

This course covers the history of motion pictures from 1975 to the present, including extensive screening of classic and contemporary films. Readings, screenings, and written assignments required. May be taken out of sequence.
Prerequisite: TAKE CM-101

Explores the history of radio and television broadcasting, including financing of research, technological developments, regulation, structure of genres, the social context and values of programs, legal and political implications of national and international broadcasting, and the effect on cultural identity and national sovereignty.
Prerequisite: Take CM-101 or MS-101;

Facilities

Sacred Heart’s facilities are only rivaled by Hollywood studios. You can make a movie from the first idea to a world premiere without ever having to leave the campus.

Students have access to a wide variety of shooting environments and locations, including our own soundstage with 20′ ceilings, a live news TV set and a green screen studio. On campus, there is also a 1950s style diner, working bar, fitness center, rock wall, bowling alley, 100-seat cinema, screening rooms, a chapel and city or country-style settings.

After shooting, our students learn the craft of editing on professional computer systems in our dedicated computer lab that include the Adobe Creative Suite, Davinci Resolve and Protools. We also have two finishing suites for color correct, sound mix and sound design.

Access to state-of-the-art VR/AR/XR labs and makerspaces as well as relationships with other University departments (broadcast television, advertising, public relations, art and design, etc.), allow for collaboration in production design, marketing, advertising, business and distribution. In addition to all the facilities on SHU’s West Campus, students also have access to the assets in the School of Communication, Media, and the Arts including:

Sacred Heart’s home is in the heart of Connecticut’s “Creative Corridor” with close ties to nearby New York City, which means students in the film & television program can go beyond the classroom into professional environments. Through partnerships with media companies and mentorship from industry professionals, students make meaningful industry connections. Students have the opportunity to work at high profile companies such as ABC News, NBC, CBS and MTV, among other top corporations.
