Our biggest college and home to the widest array of programs, it’s also the source of the career-focused liberal arts foundation that drives academics at SHU. Mission
The mission of the College of Arts & Sciences is to foster a dynamic and inclusive community of students, faculty and staff dedicated to intellectual inquiry, lifelong learning, global engagement, civic and social responsibility, human dignity and the common good. With its rigorous values-based curriculum, the College of Arts & Sciences provides the foundation of the students’ learning experience, leading the University in exploring, transmitting and developing the Liberal Arts and Catholic Intellectual traditions.
Vision
The College of Arts & Sciences aspires to be a diverse community of internationally recognized scholars, excellent teachers and mentors, and intellectually engaged students. Through distinctive academic programs, we strive to demonstrate the essential role of the liberal arts for contemporary society through a curriculum that fosters intentional reflection and courageous civil discourse and develops wise leaders committed to making meaningful contributions to local, national and global communities.
The overarching goals of SHU’s College of Arts & Sciences are:
- The development of skills in reading, writing, and oral communication; critical thinking; and quantitative and scientific reasoning
- The cultivation of intellectual inquiry, lifelong learning, and civic engagement, especially as relates to social justice and the common good
- An appreciation of the value of the liberal arts and Catholic Intellectual Traditions, especially to foster multidisciplinary and collaborative approaches to addressing contemporary problems
- The preparation of strong leaders and contributors to the local, national and global communities
