April 16, 2024
Richard E.A. Nunes is staff attorney for the Bergen County’s Juvenile Court and a member of the Bergen County Office of the Public Defender.
A former chief judge of the Newark Municipal Court, one of the largest in the United States, he spent eight years on the bench, arraigning defendants, conducting bail hearings and presiding over trials. Working to stop recidivism, he implemented the first community court in the state of New Jersey, Newark Community Solutions, a problem-solving court for non-violent offenders that focuses on the root causes and needs of the defendant while addressing the wrongs the defendant caused in the community.
Prior to being a judge, he was an assistant deputy, public defender, and assisted in the implementation of Bergen County’s first drug court, where he was its first public defender.
Nunes has won many honors during his legal career, including recognition from the Jamaican Organization of New Jersey; the Caribbean Bar Association; the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Delta Pi Chapter; and the Jamaican American Bar Association, Northeast.
Nunes earned his Juris Doctorate at Seton Hall University School of Law and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science with a concentration in African studies from the College of the Holy Cross.
