Karl E. Minges, Ph.D., was appointed as dean of the College of Health Professions at Sacred Heart University in February 2025. In this role, he is primarily responsible for the academic leadership and overall management of the College, overseeing academic programs including assessment and accreditation, faculty and staff performance, student success, budget allocation, research activity and program development while ensuring alignment with the institution's mission and strategic goals.

Formerly, Minges was associate professor and associate dean for research in the School of Health Sciences at the University of New Haven. He also served as chair of the Department of Population Health & Leadership and founding director of the Master of Public Health program. From 2021 to 2022, he was interim dean of the School of Health Sciences, a position he held for twelve months.

Minges is an expert on improving health systems through clinical decision-making, quality measurement and the evaluation of healthcare interventions. As a public health practitioner, he is interested in improving the health outcomes of vulnerable populations. Minges is director-at-large of the Connecticut Public Health Association and is actively involved with the American Public Health Association’s Medical Care Special Interest Group, the American College of Cardiology and the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) at Yale School of Medicine.

Cited 3500 times, with an h-index of 28, Minges is author to over 65 publications in leading journals including  the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), JAMA Internal Medicine, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, and Health Psychology among others. In May 2020, he received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) award, which focuses on reducing rehospitalization rates in skilled nursing facilities. In addition to NIH funding, his research has been supported by the Department of Justice, the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health and the State of Connecticut; collectively he has secured over $6M in grants as a principal investigator or co-investigator.

Minges has been the recipient of numerous early career awards, including those from the American Heart Association, Society of Behavioral Medicine, and the Anthony DiGuida Dissertation Prize. In 2021, he received the Faculty Recognition Award for his outstanding service, research and teaching to the University of New Haven. In January 2023, his leadership and contributions to public health were highlighted in Connecticut Magazine’s “40 Under 40” recognition. He also received the University of New Haven Research Excellence award in 2023, the highest award for research at the institution, and he was selected as a University Research Scholar. Minges earned his Ph.D. at Yale University in 2016, his MPH degree at Columbia University in 2010 and was a Fulbright Scholar to Australia.

Research & Grants

Minges' work reflects a strong commitment to improving patient care through evidence-based research in cardiovascular health, quality improvement and health education. His research interests are rooted in public health and are varied in application, comprising quality of care and health outcomes research, comparative effectiveness of cardiovascular interventions, patient education and guidelines implementation and behavioral medicine and lifestyle interventions. Nearly all his research projects have involved students and interprofessional collaboration.
