SHU Community Theatre Launches Summer MovieMaker Workshop for High Schoolers
Teens will learn how to write scripts, film and edit from seasoned professionals
This summer high school students can take their creative vision from script to set to screen in an exciting, new, three-week summer workshop at the SHU Community Theatre. MovieMaker Workshop: A Summer Film Program, is open to students in high school.
The workshop will take place in three-week sessions at the downtown theatre and the SHU campus. Session one will run Monday through Friday, July 10-28 from 9 a.m. to noon and session two will run Monday through Friday, July 31 to August 18 from 9 a.m. to noon. Each weekday, participants will gather at SHU Community Theatre spending three full hours learning and practicing their filmmaking skills—working towards a final screening of their work. The fee is $1,200 per three-week session.
- Week I: Study the art of storytelling through writing a script and choosing the actors
- Week II: Lights, Camera … Action! Time to ready the sets and shoot scenes
- Week III: Head to the editing suite to choose takes, add music and sound effects and watch a future screen gem emerge
With sessions capped at 60 participants, each student will have ample time to practice skills and work with others in this team-centered program. By session's end, each student will have worked on three final short films.
Students will work with SHU Community Theatre staff who are a seasoned team of professional artists, musicians and technical experts, with career highlights on stage and behind the scenes in film, on Broadway, in regional theater, on international music tours and more. In addition, faculty from SHU’s School of Communication, Media & the Arts, the film & television master’s program and the NeXReality Lab—with its augmented, virtual and mixed reality capabilities—will introduce the same tools and techniques found on actual movie sets.
Workshop instructors include Jason Cicci. Cicci has been working in the entertainment industry for decades, making his mark as a writer, producer and teaching artist. His independent production company, Monday Morning Productions, has produced new works by established playwrights featuring award-winning performers.
