SHU Alum Named Boston Red Sox Medical All-Star

Physical therapist recognized for exceptional patient care and dedication at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Sacred Heart University alum Maria Tucker ’13, DPT ’16 was honored by the Boston Red Sox as a medical all-star, a distinction recognizing health care professionals nominated by their colleagues for outstanding dedication to patient care.

Tucker, a physical therapist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, was selected for her commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care, and her ability to build meaningful connections with patients, families, and clinical staff.

The Boston Red Sox Medical All-Star program recognizes health care professionals across the region whose work reflects the highest standards of clinical excellence and team-based care.

Tucker, who earned her exercise science degree and Doctor of Physical Therapy from SHU’s College of Health Professions, credited her time at SHU as foundational to her clinical identity. Her path to physical therapy was shaped by deeply personal experience: after being struck by a motor vehicle and sustaining vertebral compression fractures, she underwent weeks of rehabilitation and witnessed firsthand the influence physical therapy can have on recovery.

“I was inspired to pursue a career in physical therapy following my own experience in PT,” Tucker said. “What I enjoy most about working at BIDMC is the opportunity to care for a highly complex and diverse range of patients alongside a collaborative interdisciplinary team. It is inspiring and rewarding to witness my patients’ progress each session, build meaningful connections with them, and advocate for their needs throughout their stay.”

Now more than a decade into her career at BIDMC, Tucker reflects on how Sacred Heart prepared her for the demands of an acute care setting.

“The hands-on learning and my clinical experiences taught me how to think critically, adapt in the moment to patients’ needs and responses, and work effectively as part of a team,” Tucker said. “Sacred Heart gave me the confidence to keep learning, stay adaptable, and focus on what matters most: the patients.”

Tucker described the recognition as a reflection of the values she carries from her time at SHU into every patient interaction.

“This award reinforces how important it is to not only provide care that is patient-centered, but also how compassion, communication, and teamwork are vital to achieving great patient care,” she said. “I'm also truly grateful to work alongside colleagues who make this level of care possible.”

For students currently preparing for careers in physical therapy or health care, Tucker's advice is: invest in relationships, ask questions, and never lose sight of the patient.

“Build strong relationships with your professors, classmates, mentors, clinical instructors, and clinical teams, as you'll learn something from each of them every day,” she said. “Focus not only on developing your clinical skills, but also on listening, communicating, and connecting with your patients. Your ability to build rapport and make the patient feel seen and heard makes more of a difference than you realize.”
