The Lupos are giving back to the University that has had a major part in their lives

Scott and Kristin LupoA couple with strong ties to Sacred Heart University have endowed two scholarships for nursing students.

Scott Lupo, assistant supervisor and public safety officer at SHU, and his wife, Kristin Lupo ’15 a graduate student in SHU’s Dr. Susan L. Davis, R.N., & Richard J. Henley College of Nursing (DHCON) have endowed the annual Scott & Kristin Lupo Nursing Scholarship for undergraduate students enrolled full-time in the College of Nursing. The second endowed scholarship by the similar name, The Kristin & Scott Lupo Nursing Scholarship will go to nursing students with priority consideration given to those enrolled in St. Vincent’s College. This year’s recipients were Andrew Asselt and Joshua Teixeria, respectively.

After receiving an inheritance from Scott Lupo’s mother, the pair decided to give back to the University in appreciation for Scott’s career and Kristin’s education.

Scott Lupo was insistent that his wife be integrated into the process as much as possible. “We're in this together,” said Lupo. “We’ve actually been married as long as I've worked at Sacred Heart. Our anniversaries are the same.”

The Lupos’ first decision was choosing the type of scholarship to fund. They decided to endow and have something that would “leave a legacy.” They then decided which college would bestow the scholarships. Based on Kristin Lupo’s connection to nursing, and in recognition of the nurses who took good care of Scott Lupo’s mother while she was ill, the pair decided DHCON was the perfect place for their two endowments.

“I was impressed with the Lupos’ conviction to make a significant impact and help students who have a passion for nursing,” said Karen Daley, dean of DHCON. “The SHU community is grateful for their generosity.”

Kristin Lupo played a significant role in deciding the scholarships criteria. “I wanted to make sure recipients not only meet the financial need requirement, but that they also have a true love of nursing,” she said. “I feel like I can relate to that student, whoever gets the scholarship, since I'm still in school myself, trying to balance work, school, life and my kids.”

“The Lupo family recognizes the power of scholarship and that is transformational,” said Paul J. Sutera, SHU’s senior vice president of University advancement. “These endowed scholarships will further aid our efforts in retaining and attracting the best nursing students. This type of investment in our students goes on to support affordability and accessibility initiatives. Scholarship is an interesting and exciting thing. It doesn’t just help deserving students succeed, it also changes their trajectory in life.”

The Lupos have a son, Brian, at SHU studying in the School of Communication, Media & the Arts and they are excited to see him at the University. “We’ve seen SHU grow so much, and I'm so proud to partner with Scott on this. He knows just how much this University is a part of our lives. It’s ingrained in us,” said Kristin Lupo.

Kristin Lupo currently works at Stamford Hospital as a registered nurse while pursuing her master’s degree in SHU’s nurse educator program. She anticipates graduating in May 2023.

The Lupos also have a daughter, Stephanie, who is a junior in high school, and SHU is on her short list of colleges.
