Kristin Schweizer Selected for State Board of Examiners
The new role recognizes Schweizer’s expertise in physical therapy
A Sacred Heart University faculty member has joined the Connecticut Board of Examiners for Physical Therapists. Kristin Schweizer, clinical assistant professor of physical therapy and associate director of clinical education for SHU’s doctor of physical therapy program, was appointed by Gov. Ned Lamont.
Schweizer has been on SHU’s faculty for nine years. Her primary areas of focus are neurologic rehabilitation, health policy and practice management, with an emphasis on regulatory compliance, patient safety and quality improvement. Additionally, as associate director of clinical education, the clinical education team coordinates and oversees students’ clinical education experiences to ensure they develop and demonstrate entry-level competencies as physical therapists.
The Connecticut Board of Examiners for Physical Therapists is comprised of three physical therapists and two public members. An extensive application process precedes consideration for an appointment. The governor may appoint a physical therapist from a list of three qualified people whose names are submitted by the Connecticut chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association.
Schweizer will be involved in the board’s primary mission of protecting the health and safety of those who receive physical therapy services in Connecticut through administering and regulating licensure of physical therapists and physical therapist assistants.
“This is a very important role for our profession and helps to recognize both Kristin and the excellent faculty we have at SHU,” said Maura Daly Iversen, dean of SHU’s College of Health Professions. “Kristin is an excellent candidate for this position, as she has many years of clinical experience and education in physical therapy, is very active in the American Physical Therapy Association and is well-versed in what competencies students need to become excellent clinicians.”
Schweizer is also adept at ensuring continued effectiveness. “In my prior role as a manager in the clinical environment, my responsibilities have included ensuring the ongoing competence of clinicians and the maintenance of a sound practice environment to promote safe and effective care for patients. These perspectives will help inform my responsibilities on the Board of Examiners,” she said.
Schweizer holds a doctorate and master’s degree in physical therapy and a bachelor of science degree in biology.
