In the Film & Television Production Dual Degree Program, students find their artistic vision in a collaborative environment in which they live and breathe filmmaking. Through hands-on experiences, students land impressive internships allowing them to get jobs in a field they love. SHU faculty members are industry experts and are pleased to work in Connecticut’s only graduate program in film.

Why Earn Your Bachelor’s-Master's Degree in Film & Television Production at Sacred Heart?
Students apply to the dual degree program as incoming first-year students and are admitted directly into the film & television master’s program (FTMA) at the same time as their admission as undergraduate students. Dual degree students are guaranteed a place in the FTMA program provided they continue, as undergraduate students, to meet program-specific criteria to progress into enrollment in the graduate program.
Combined with advisement from their undergraduate academic advisor, participation in activities and programs offered by the School of Communication, Media & the Arts and the graduate program provides strong support toward successful progression into graduate study.
There are two options for the Film & Television Dual Degree Program:
4+1 Bachelor’s-Master of Arts (MA) in Film & Television Production
Students in the Master of Arts in Film & Television Production Dual Degree Program earn a Bachelor and a Master of Arts degree in five years (four years of undergraduate study and one year of graduate study).
4+2 Bachelor’s-Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Film & Television Production
Students in the Master of Fine Arts in Film & Television Production Dual Degree Program earn a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in six years (four years of undergraduate study and two years of graduate study).
Students pursuing the 4+1 or 4+2 dual degree program may be enrolled in any undergraduate major with the exception of nursing and interdisciplinary studies.

In addition to an academic adviser for their bachelor’s degree, students have faculty and advising resources that help them stay on track to progress into their graduate degree. Industry-specific events and student clubs are also available for students to be involved in their graduate field as undergraduates.

Students who participate in dual degree programs save on tuition costs from a separate graduate program.
Less Stress
When you take advantage of the dual degree program, your spot in graduate school is already reserved. There are no last-minute applications for grad school during the final months of your senior year.

Learn MoreCriteria to Progress to the Master of Arts in Film & Television Production and Master of Fine Arts in Film & Television Production (FTMA/FTMFA)
Dual degree students must meet program-specific guidelines to progress through the dual degree program and enroll in the FTMA/FTMFA program.
- Successful completion of the bachelor’s degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to matriculate into the FTMA/FTMFA program
- Grade of B or better in any graduate program courses taken during undergraduate study
- Submission of a two-page personal statement addressing the following questions:
- Why are you applying to the FTMA program at Sacred Heart University?
- What are your artistic goals?
- What issues and subjects inform your artmaking practice?
- Submission of a Five Works Essay including brief comments on five works (films, books, plays, television shows, etc.) that you feel have influenced your thoughts as a filmmaker/video artist.
- Submission of a visual work sample such as video, photography (stills) or script/screenplay.
