This asynchronous 2-hour course will focus on an evidence-based approach to developing an examination, treatment plan, and return to play strategies for athletes with an abdominal strain or core muscle injury. This course will include both lecture and case discussion geared towards the clinician who is looking to broaden their knowledge and skill set as it relates to the abdominal strain or core muscle injuries in the athlete for improved patient reported outcomes.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Discuss risk factors that could contribute to an athlete developing an abdominal strain or core muscle injury
  • Identify examination/evaluation techniques to match pathology and impairments in athletes with an abdominal strain or core muscle injury
  • Synthesize a multi-phased rehabilitation program to address impairments for athletes with an abdominal strain or core muscle injury
  • List objective testing and progression of a return to sport program following an abdominal strain or core muscle injury

Josh BickelJosh Bickel is currently about to start his fourth season as the Major League Assistant Physical Therapist with the New York Mets. Prior to the Mets, he worked as a minor league physical therapist for the Cincinnati Reds from 2016-2020. Prior to the Reds, he completed the ATI Physical Therapy Upper Extremity Athlete Fellowship and spent the 2016 season with the Kansas City Royals. In 2015, he completed the Proaxis Therapy Sports Residency in Greenville, SC. He received his doctorate in physical therapy from Midwestern University in 2013 and his bachelor’s degree in biology from Concordia University-Irvine in 2008. Josh previously had been an adjunct faculty member at several physical therapy programs, an adjunct at a sports residency program, and been a clinical instructor for numerous physical therapy students. He currently resides with his wife and two sons in Stamford, CT.
