A distinctive opportunity for College of Arts & Sciences students to see and promote the value of the liberal arts in society and grow as part of a community of learners

The Pioneer Scholars program is designed for SHU undergraduates planning to graduate with at least one major from the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS). An enriching component of SHU’s comprehensive Pioneer Journey, the CAS Pioneer Scholars program occurs through sophomore, junior and senior year.

Program Details

CAS Pioneer Scholars form a cohort that takes special sections of CIT 201 and CIT 202 together; receive financial support to take a unique course at SHU Dingle, our campus in County Kerry, Ireland, with other Pioneer Scholars; and undertake an individual or group capstone project in their senior year. As part of the program, CAS Pioneer Scholars will be invited to:

  • networking events with the CAS Board of Visitors
  • special events to build community throughout each year
  • community service experiences
  • opportunities to meet and hear from visiting scholars and serve as CAS ambassadors on campus and beyond.

In addition, students accepted into this competitive program will receive:

  • a $2,000 scholarship every year in the program
  • $1,000 in support for travel to SHU’s Dingle Campus (the course taken there counts towards the Liberal Arts Explorations requirement)
  • priority registration

How to Apply

Pioneer Scholars is a competitive program. CAS students who are passionate about being involved at Sacred Heart and challenging themselves in this vibrant, engaged community should consider applying.

Eligibility Requirements

This program is open to everyone who meets the eligibility requirements. To be considered, you must:

  • Be a first-year student
  • Have declared or plan to declare a CAS major (Undecided between CAS majors are welcome)
  • Participate in at least one SHU organization, team, club or activity

Ways to Learn More

  • Talk to your academic advisor or your favorite professor during office hours. Meet in person to discuss your interest in the Pioneer Scholars program. If they have any questions, they can write to Charlie Gillespie, Ph.D. at gillespiec4@sacredheart.edu.
  • Attend an information session in December or January.

Application Process

  1. Complete the application form
  2. Write a one-page cover letter that explains your interest in the CAS Pioneer Scholars. An example is available.
  3. Film a 1-minute video to introduce yourself that answers the following question: How has an experience in a SHU course or program changed the way you view the world?
    • Why a video? We’d like to get to know you as a person and we know that might be hard to  convey through a written essay. Feel free to include anything you’d like to make yourself stand  out in the video. But don’t worry, you won’t be penalized if video is not “your thing.” If you need help setting up time to record your video, reach out to Professor Gillespie at gillespiec4@sacredheart.edu.
  4. Request that your academic advisor or a member a member of the CAS faculty provide an anonymous endorsement of your application

Applications will be evaluated in a holistic way to create a diverse, energized and engaged group of students. GPA will be considered, but it will not be the final deciding factor for any applicant.
