Programs

Psychology is a hub science, integrating and influencing several other disciplines. As a result, studying psychology opens opportunities for graduate studies and careers in many diverse fields – from research and practice to business, education, human resources and more.

The Psychology department offers the largest undergraduate program at the University, with both a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a minor in psychology. In addition, SHU offers hybrid and advanced programs tailored to specific career interests, providing a pathway for incoming students to move seamlessly from an undergraduate to a graduate degree:

Majoring in psychology at Sacred Heart is the best decision I could have made. There is a supportive and encouraging academic atmosphere and many opportunities to expand my understanding and knowledge. As a research assistant in the program, I’ve made valuable connections with professors, presented research at national conferences and advanced my research skills. As president of the Psychology Club, I’ve connected with fellow psychology majors and facilitated an accepting and inclusive environment for students. My participation in an internship for course credit has allowed me to explore my field of interest in a professional setting. Because of these opportunities, I have laid a foundation for post-graduate success.

Mission

The Department of Psychology supports the goals of the University and the College of Arts & Sciences as described in their respective mission statements. In addition, the Psychology department has the goal of providing its students with a basic foundation in the scientific study of behavior. Included in this goal is an understanding and appreciation of the history of the discipline and all of its many current subspecialties. Upon completion of the Baccalaureate degree, graduates will be prepared to pursue graduate work in psychology or a related field, or will be ready for employment in a variety of entry-level human services positions.
