Biology Laboratories
Sacred Heart University has four biology laboratories:
- general biology laboratory
- anatomy and physiology/ systems physiology laboratory
- cellular/ molecular laboratory
- ecology/-organismal laboratory
SHU also has two instrumental research laboratories (cell/molecular biology and neurobiology) and a climate-controlled greenhouse.
Modern Equipment
Modern equipment is available for such techniques as electrophoresis, high-speed centrifugation, recombinant DNA, multitemperature incubation, oscillography, histological preparation, cell culture, micro-injection/ manipulation, digital data and image acquisition, animal and plant physiology experiments and aquatic and terrestrial environmental studies.
Recently acquired enhancements include: a spinning disk confocal fluorescent microscope for live and fixed cell imaging, a real-time PCR thermocycler for quantitative nucleic acid analysis, a Noldus EthoVision tracker for zebrafish behavior data collection, a cryostat microtome for histological sectioning, and a microplate spectro-fluorometer for high-throughput biochemical assays.
In addition, the department maintains a generous budget for outside nucleic acid sequencing services (both traditional and high-throughput).
