As associate dean, Steven Michels, Ph.D., oversees SHU’s faculty and curriculum development, strategic planning and budgeting. He also oversees the Thomas More Honors Program. 

His responsibilities included outcome assessment and accreditation, faculty and curriculum development, sponsored programs and undergraduate research. Before taking on the role, Michels acted as associate provost. 

Michels has been with SHU since 2002, teaching numerous courses in political science. His teachings touch on democratic theory and practice, higher education and popular culture. 

Michels’ many publications include Science Fiction and Political Philosophy: From Bacon to Black Mirror (Lexington Books, 2020), which he edited with a SHU graduate.

Research Interests and Grants

Michels’ research focuses on political economy, democracy and democratic culture. He has received several grants to support SHU’s critical thinking program and the open-educational resources initiative.
