Ololade Afolabi, PhD

Professor Afolabi is a scholar-teacher of media studies with specialties in international communication, global media and flows, digital media, critical cultural studies and women studies. Her research explores the role of platforms and media industries in shaping identities of people, especially women in the Global South and how new discourses about women are emerging from alternative spaces of communication. Her research has covered issues relating to technology and social change, online communities and interpersonal networking, media flow and contraflow, political economy of internet activism among many others. She is a recipient of top paper awards and has received several other awards for her research including Adam Smith Research Fellowship from the Mercatus Center, Cornell Summer School on Designing Technology for Social Impact, National Communication Association Doctoral Honors Seminar, National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Digital Culture Research Award among others. She is also a former Fulbright Scholar with experience teaching foreign language. Dr. Afolabi is a published scholar and constantly reviews for top journals in the field of media and communication and African studies. She also serves on the Editorial Board of Florida Communication Journal.
