Lucjan T. Orlowski is Professor of Economics and Finance and Founding Director of Doctor of Business Administration in Finance program at Sacred Heart University. Prior to joining SHU, Professor Orlowski taught at New York University and before that at the University of Economics in Katowice, Poland.

His research areas include monetary economics, financial markets and institutions, and financial stability. He has authored numerous books, chapters in edited volumes and articles in scholarly journals.   He has collaborated with many prominent international institutions and universities in the US, Europe and Asia and advised governments and financial institutions. He served as a Member of the Macroeconomic Policy Council of Poland’s Ministry of Finance and as a Senior Adviser to the National Bank of Poland. He was a member of the U.S. Government Mission to Eastern Europe.

Prof. Orlowski has been actively involved with the European Union's eastern enlargement, particularly the design of monetary and financial integration strategies. He was instrumental in the implementation of the inflation targeting strategy in Poland and helped develop the analytical framework for macroeconomic analysis and inflation forecasting models. He has worked with the European Commission’s Economic and Finance Committee on the post-crisis policy responses to extreme risks in financial markets. He collaborates with Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group on analyzing volatility of financial futures.  

He has been a member of the Executive Board of Association for Comparative Economic Studies, the Advisory Council of Center for Economic and Social Research in Warsaw, and the Advisory Board of the DRI-WEFA Group in Washington, D.C.

He serves on editorial boards of: Economic Systems, Comparative Economic Studies and Banks and Bank Systems. He is an Associate Editor of Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, a Regional Editor of Journal of Emerging Markets and a Guest Editor of Open Economies Review and Economic Systems.

He is a recipient of 2014 Doctor Honoris Causa from Wrocław University of Economics.

Research Interests & Grants

Professor Orlowski's research interests concentrate on financial markets risk in relation to macroeconomic and financial stability. His recent research focuses on modeling and assessing extreme financial risks. He is a recipient of three grants from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group Foundation for research on volatility of financial futures and its impact on real economy.
