Dr. Irina Ellison, a native New Yorker, joins the College of Health Professions at Sacred Heart University with over 20 years of experience teaching science to both undergraduate and graduate health professions students from a variety of institutions in and around New York City. She is a dedicated and experienced academic leader, having served in several appointed and elected academic leadership roles with increasingly more responsibility, broadly effecting change to support inclusivity, academic excellence, and student success. Dr. Ellison is an avid researcher and has served as both a project director and activity director on several grants with total grant funding totaling over $6 million. Her research focuses on strategies to build a more just, accessible, and inclusive educational environment and a world in which neither health outcomes nor graduation rates are defined by social determinants.

Teaching Responsibilities

Dr. Ellison has extensive experience developing curricula and courses across the Health Professions, Biology and Honors.

Research Interests & Grants

Dr. Ellison's interdisciplinary research interests focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, interprofessional education (IPE) and student success as well as the public health of cigarette smoking. She has presented her work both nationally and internationally and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals (see publications link below).

She has written as well as served as a project director and activity director on a variety of both federal and foundation grants awarded by the U.S. Department of Education (Title V and Title III), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Truth Initiative and the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB).
