Gregory Viggiano, Ph.D.

Gregory Viggiano, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Ancient History. He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and economics from the University of Montana at Missoula; a master’s in classics from the University of Texas at Austin; and a doctorate in classical philology from Yale University. He teaches courses on the Ancient Near East, Ancient Greece and Rome, Greek and Roman historiography, Age of Pericles, Ancient Greek Political and Moral Thought, and general courses on the history of Western Civilization before 1500. He has co-edited two books with Donald Kagan, most recently Men of Bronze: Hoplite Warfare in Ancient Greece, a well-received collection of essays published by Princeton University Press in 2013 to which he contributed one single-authored chapter, and two co-authored chapters. The book has been reviewed in The Classical Journal, Phoenix, His research interests span the Mediterranean Classical world from Classical Greece, Greek and Roman Historiography, to Greek Law. His 2005 Yale dissertation is called "Unreported speeches in Thucydides." Dr. Viggiano is a member of American Philological Association and the American Historical Association.
