Dr. Stiltner has been a member of the department since 1998 and served as its chair 2006–2008 and 2011–2016. He has chaired the university's Committee on Rank and Tenure, founded its initial center for Catholic Studies in 2003 and served on many committees dedicated to improving teaching and promoting ethics. He currently co-directs the Hersher Institute for Applied Ethics and co-chairs the Interprofessional Palliative Care Committee.

Professionally, Dr. Stiltner participates in several scholarly societies, reviews articles for various journals, and helps lead social justice initiatives in the Catholic Church in Connecticut. He writes for the university’s “Go, Rebuild My House” blog, and gives lectures on ethical issues both on and off campus. He has published four books and written over a dozen journal articles and book chapters.

Brian lives in Hamden, Connecticut, with his wife Ann, who is a special education teacher and author, and their two children. His interests include baseball, travel, alternative-rock concerts, puzzles and word games.

Teaching Responsibilities

Prof. Stiltner's teaching and research interests include bioethics, human rights, ethics of war and peace, Catholic social ethics and the role of religion and virtues in American society. He teaches courses on these and other topics, as well as in the Critical Thinking program.
