Who is Angelo Roncalli?

Angelo Roncalli - Pope John XXIII
1881-1963

Angelo RoncalliOne of the most prominent and important figures in modern Church history, Angelo Roncalli convened the Second Vatican Council as Pope John XXIII in 1961. Under his vision, the Church responded with unprecedented vigor and vision to the ever-changing modern world. He was canonized a saint in 2014. His pontificate, which lasted less than five years, presented him to the entire world as an authentic image of the Good Shepherd. Meek and gentle, enterprising and courageous, simple and active, he carried out the Christian duties of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy: visiting the imprisoned and the sick, welcoming those of every nation and faith. He launched an extensive renewal of the Church, including the fundamental reshaping of the laity’s role. Sacred Heart University, led and staffed by lay people, was founded in the midst of this renewal.
