Mission, Vision, Values and Guiding Principles
Sacred Heart University’s mission and its guiding principles shape our community: who we are, how we interact and who we aspire to be.
It calls our entire community to strengthen the distinctive culture that defines our institution. We are a university rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition and the liberal arts, inspired by the pioneering vision of the Second Vatican Council, which embraced the Church’s desire to respond to the needs of a changing world while remaining true to its living tradition. In that same pioneering spirit, SHU must embrace the future while intentionally nurturing and maintaining its essential nature. SHU’s extraordinary and rapid expansion of our student population, our physical plant and the University’s vision for research has entailed growth in both size and complexity. The institution responds to the demands of growth while maintaining its commitments to teaching excellence, research, mission, social justice and to the key tenets of our Pioneer Journey: intentional reflection and courageous civil discourse. Our guiding principles provide a roadmap for affirming our values and purpose, identifying our priorities and shaping the University’s future. Our mission and culture will continue to be the cornerstones of all that we do.
Charism Statement
In the Catholic intellectual tradition, a charism is understood to be a gift of the Holy Spirit given to a person or a community to do the work of God in the world in a special way. A Catholic university’s charism animates its founding spirit, gives continuity to its mission, and produces shared identity and heritage.
Loved into being and dignified by the Incarnation, every human heart is equipped and called to inquire, discern, understand, relate, express, create, serve, and heal in ways that help us more fully become ourselves, on a journey to live courageous lives of meaning and purpose.
Born from Vatican II and dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we embrace the responsibility of the laity to perceive the truth, goodness, and beauty of the world. We are called to bring God’s love to the world, and all in it, without exception. God’s love, encountered through revelation, creation and tradition, can be known and extended in many ways. We seek truth, work for justice, create art, extend compassion, engage community, embrace relationships, offer hospitality, and cultivate and enhance a civilization of love.
