Health Science & Public Health in Oaxaca, Mexico
In partnership with Simply Smiles, Health Science and Public Health students will live and work at the Simply Smiles Home for Children in San Bartolo Coyotepec, a suburb of Oaxaca City. They will get a chance to experience the historic and densely-populated Oaxaca Valley with its breathtaking mountain views.
Health Science and Master of Public Health students will have the opportunity to visit the Simply Smiles Home for Children in Oaxaca, Mexico. Students will be immersed in the Simply Smiles home, sharing meals and activities with the children. In the morning, students will work on a project around the home. In the afternoon, students may help the children with schoolwork or lead health-focused activities. There will be excursions into downtown Oaxaca and to either San Bartolo Coyotepec or Monte Alban.
For MPH students, this program will be embedded in PBH-550 Community Health Development. MPH students will create a product (e.g., educational resource, advocacy campaign) that satisfies an unmet need within the organization. Prior to travel, students will meet with stakeholders to define project goals and a timeline for completion. Health Science students will design activities to do with the children as part of a health-themed week. Internship credit is available for Health Science students.
