Here’s a step-by-step guide for how to earn one of the most important student positions on campus

Key Highlights

  • Student ambassadors play a vital role in recruiting and welcoming future Pioneers at SHU
  • Ambassadors lead campus tours, greet families and serve as knowledgeable, forward-facing representatives of the University
  • Open to rising sophomores, juniors and seniors who are energetic, outgoing, involved on campus and passionate about SHU

Are you passionate about the Pioneer community, someone who loves to help others and are looking to make an impact beyond Park Avenue? If so, maybe pursuing the role of student ambassador is right for you.

At Sacred Heart University, student ambassadors are essential team members in the  undergraduate admissions office and their recruitment efforts. A student ambassador welcomes families, leads tours for potential students and functions as a forward-facing resource to future Pios.

“If you’re looking for a way to share your love for SHU and get involved on campus, being a student ambassador is a perfect fit,” said junior Lauren McQuillan, who is in her first year of the program.

What qualifications do you need?

First and foremost, only students who are rising sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to apply. As student ambassadors are in many ways the face of the University, candidates must have energetic, outgoing and friendly personalities. Additionally, you should have a strong work ethic, be able to work well in teams and be passionate about all things SHU. With that said, candidates should also be heavily involved both in and outside of the classroom at SHU and should be able to speak about their experiences in a variety of academic and extracurricular activities.

How do you apply?

Beginning in February, undergraduate admissions will host regular information sessions and table times to learn more about the program, including key dates, hiring requirements and details about the application process. In March, the online application is opened, which remains available for three weeks. After an initial review of applications, the office offers interviews to approximately 75 applicants and then formally offers the position to approximately 55 interviewees. Those selected must then complete a mandatory one-week training in August, after which they sign a contract to become a student ambassador officially.

What are the benefits of becoming a student ambassador?

“Being from Minnesota, coming to Sacred Heart was a big decision for my family,” said McQuillan. “I love sharing why I chose SHU and what I love most about it.”

The role offers valuable leadership opportunities, professional skill-building and a close-knit community of students and staff.

“Student ambassadors form lifelong connections with others who are passionate about Sacred Heart,” said Mia Coluccio '22, director of campus experience. “They often become a major influence in a prospective student’s decision to attend.”

What are some day-to-day responsibilities?

Although it’s cliché to say, there are no two days that are the same in the University’s undergraduate admissions office. What potential candidates can expect at the very least is a steady diet of guiding tours of the Park Avenue campus for prospective students and their families, Monday through Friday, as well as select Saturdays and Sundays. Some student ambassadors may guide families through dedicated academic facilities, including the Center for Healthcare Education and West Campus. Student ambassadors also play a prominent role in all large-scale admissions events, including University open houses and admitted student days. Selected student ambassadors can appear in discussion panels, photoshoots and travel with the staff to regional receptions across the Northeast.

How can it benefit your post-college career?

The position of student ambassador is a great way to earn real-world professional experience early in your collegiate career. This experience not only gives ambassadors a look into professional life but also a glimpse at what a career in higher education could hold.

“I’ve learned so much about communication, leadership and public speaking while balancing academics and athletics and this role,” said McQuillan. Fellow ambassador senior Kaleigh Porcu added, “One of the best parts has been meeting so many different people. I have had the opportunity to meet prospective students, their families, other student ambassadors and Sacred Heart faculty. It’s opened doors for me personally and professionally.”
