Professor Publishes Fourth Edition of Advanced Practice Nursing Textbook
Students in more than 300 nursing programs are learning from book
Sacred Heart University professor Susan DeNisco recently published an updated, fourth edition of her textbook, “Advanced Nursing Practice: Essential Knowledge for the Profession,” to provide a strong foundation for the preparation of a resilient practitioner who can advance the health of the nation and global community.
DeNisco, who also is director of SHU’s doctor of nursing practice/family nurse practitioner program, first wrote the textbook a decade ago after seeing a need for more knowledge of advanced nursing and the health-care industry. Today, at least 300 nursing programs across the country have adopted this book, including SHU’s graduate nursing program. “The textbook was developed for graduate nursing students and covers all the core concepts endorsed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioners,” said DeNisco.
The book encompasses numerous topics that aspiring nurse practitioners, leaders and educators need to learn including professional roles for advanced practice, health-care delivery, quality, safety and information systems, theory, research and evidence-based practice, race, culture, ethics and advocacy, leadership and role transition. Several SHU faculty have contributed their expertise to this book including, Michelle Cole, Kerry Milner and Christina Gunther.
“I am excited about the new edition as it incorporates current trends in advanced practice nursing and information about the emerging populations we care for. It gives students and faculty the opportunity to synthesize new information. As graduate nursing students expand their knowledge base, they will hone their current nursing skills to become an advanced clinician and leader in nursing,” DeNisco said. “I have been in practice for more than 30 years, my aim is to develop the new generation of advanced practice nurses who can respond to an ever-changing demographic population and to the pressures of a complex health-care system.”
DeNisco began work on her fourth edition in 2018, and her publishers, Jones and Bartlett, released it in October of 2019. It includes relevant information from other publications under Jones and Bartlett including new information on big data, health-care business, writing for publication and strategic career planning. “This process was a labor of love for my profession; reflecting in a quiet place, researching and writing which comes naturally to me. I would say the best part of this journey is having something that I can leave behind as a legacy for the nursing profession at large,” DeNisco said.
DeNisco was inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing Practitioners for her extensive clinical and scholarly contributions to advanced nursing practice as a family nurse practitioner.
