More than 450 alumni, parents, students, and friends of Sacred Heart University came together in a powerful display of Pioneer pride at the University’s annual Pioneer Scholarship Gala, raising over $825,000 to support student scholarships.
The gala is SHU’s premier fundraising event focused on scholarship and providing students with an excellent college education along with the vision and skills to be meaningful contributors to society. This year’s event held at the Martire Family Arena honored Craig Melvin, co-anchor of NBC News’ TODAY, a co-host of the 3rd Hour of TODAY and a host of the Dateline NBC broadcasts, and James T. Morley, Jr., a SHU board of trustee member and former communications executive.
The evening highlighted the University community’s shared commitment to expanding access to a Sacred Heart education. A vibrant program brought that mission to life, reflecting the spirit and energy of SHU. Performances by the SHU Claddagh Dance Team and a SHU a cappella group, SHUpermen energized the crowd, while senior Renna Badolato ’26 delivered one of the night’s most memorable moments.
Badolato shared a powerful and personal reflection on how scholarship support has shaped her Sacred Heart experience, emphasizing the direct impact of donor generosity on students’ lives.
“I’m living proof that your donations don’t just change lives—they save them,” said Badolato.
Her remarks served as a meaningful reminder of the lasting difference scholarship support makes within the Pioneer community.
The University recognized Melvin and Morley for their leadership and accomplishments.
“Who we become is shaped not in isolation, but through engagement, encounter, and community—exactly what Sacred Heart strives to achieve,” said Morley.
Building on that sense of community, Melvin reflected on his recent time spent on campus, noting that the experience made it clear to him that Sacred Heart is “something very special.”
“When I heard Renna’s story and saw the type of student receiving a scholarship, it made me think—Sacred Heart should be incredibly proud,” Melvin added.
Guiding the evening was emcee Lindsay Czarniak, a veteran sports anchor and reporter known for her work with ESPN and FOX Sports, and Melvin’s wife, whose warmth and professionalism helped create a seamless and engaging experience for guests.
From inspiring speeches to celebratory moments, the gala showcased the strength and generosity of the Pioneer community. The more than $825,000 raised will have a meaningful and lasting impact, ensuring that more students have access to the opportunities and experiences that define a Sacred Heart education.
“This evening brings our community together to recognize exceptional leaders—including a dedicated member of our Board of Trustees and a distinguished NBC anchor—while keeping our focus where it matters most: on our students and the scholarships that help them pursue their goals,” said Paul J. Sutera, senior vice president of University advancement. “We’re also proud to have raised significant investment that will make a meaningful difference in their futures.”
