Shareable icon acknowledges and documents students’ work outside of the classroom

Sacred Heart University’s performing arts program recently introduced a new initiative that rewards students for their extracurricular work: digital badges.

The badges are digital icons that a person earns, and which equate to a certificate of accomplishment. There is a specific badge for each cohort within the performing arts program: dance, choral, theatre arts and band & orchestra. Students can display the badges on their LinkedIn page or share them on other social media to mark their professional achievements.

Digital Badges for Performing Arts

Gerald Goehring, executive director of performing arts, designed the digital badge program in collaboration with several other University divisions including Mark Beekey, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences; Denise Tiberio, dean of students; and Jason Makarow, University chief of staff. SHU President John J. Petillo was also instrumental in its implementation.

“This new venture is a testament to the work of our world-class faculty and staff,” Petillo said. “Their groundbreaking thinking will further prepare our students with the hands-on experience they need to succeed in their respective careers.”

The digital badges represent a student’s experience and training outside of the classroom. There is an advanced dance performance badge for dance, a cantor image to represent the choral program, a stage management badge for students in theatre arts and a marching arts icon for band & orchestra members.

“The badges will help performing arts students by acknowledging the additional experience and expertise they gain in their fields. These experiences equip them with skills they will need in the professional world,” Goehring said.

Earning each badge comes with a rigorous set of requirements, including practical experience, performance proficiency and a final assessment. The badges provide students with documented and shareable credentials that will be of tremendous value in their professional careers.
