The site offers 18 holes, a public restaurant and an event venue alongside the Housatonic River

Sacred Heart University’s Great River Golf Club in Milford earned the rank of Connecticut’s top public golf course in Northeast Golf magazine.

The 18-hole course is next to the Housatonic River, only 11 miles from SHU’s main campus. Tommy Fazio designed the course on 150 acres with a 32,000-square-foot clubhouse.

Great River is a semi-private club that offers more than golf. It is equipped to host corporate events and weddings, and it has a public restaurant. The club also offers lessons and junior camps. Memberships are available for purchase.

“When Sacred Heart purchased Great River, our membership level was 110, and today we are capped at 290. All of the hard work over the past six years has paid off, and now we hold the #1 rank in the Northeast,” said Mark Appelberg, executive director of Great River Golf Club. “This enables Great River to position itself competitively with clubs that are privately owned.”

In compiling the assessment of golf courses, Northeast Golf magazine compared Great River to others in the state, such as Connecticut National, Gillette Ridge, Lake of Isles-North and Shennecossette.
