Funding will help SHU continue educational program for underserved children

Sacred Heart University’s Horizons at SHU, which provides educational opportunities for Bridgeport children, has received an $18,000 grant from The Inner-City Foundation for Charity & Education to support its mission. The funds will be distributed in installments of $6,000 for the next three fiscal years.

The foundation advocates for organizations that assist Fairfield County children and adults who need food, clothing, shelter, counseling and education. In the last 25 years, it has awarded $32 million in grants to 200 organizations.

Horizons at SHU is a chapter of Horizons National, a nonprofit organization based in Westport that describes itself as “committed to ensuring all children have the opportunity to thrive and learn.” Its programs are non-tuition-based and assist more than 5,000 students between kindergarten and eighth grade. Horizons National promotes a curriculum that involves hands-on academics, arts, culture and recreation

Sacred Heart’s chapter, Horizons at SHU, hosts Bridgeport children on campus. Its intensive summer session runs Monday through Friday for six weeks. Additionally, it provides a program on Saturdays during the academic year. The programs’ goal is to engage the children in learning when school is not in session, in order to close the educational gap.

“Horizons at SHU is incredibly grateful for the grant from the Inner-City Foundation for Charity & Education,” said Jaime Perri, the program’s executive director. “This contribution toward our program enables us to continue our work and further our mission to help our students.”
