Sacred Heart University senior Fred Stiefel, a history major with minors in political science and anthropology, spent this past summer learning the ins and outs of government as a congressional intern in the Pearl River office of New York Congressman Mike Lawler.
“I was lucky enough to have a connection in the office who told me about the opportunity,” Stiefel said. “It was a chance to see firsthand what a career in politics might look like after graduation and to gain practical experience in the field.”
Through his internship, Stiefel saw how decisions made in government affect everyday lives. “I learned how political decisions can impact people—and how they respond to those changes,” he said. “I also gained insight into the legislative process and how congressional offices help people navigate social issues, which is a big reason I’m interested in politics.”
Faculty support at Sacred Heart University helped him prepare for the experience and make the most of it. “My professors—David Luesink, Kevin Gledhill, Kelly Marino and Jennifer McLaughlin—all offered guidance and advice that was vital,” Stiefel said.
Looking ahead, Stiefel hopes to work in a museum, an archive or within local government, blending his academic interests with hands-on public service.
Stiefel encourages students interested in internships to take advantage of every connection and opportunity that comes their way.
“Your professors and the people around you can be great resources,” Stiefel said. “You never know who might help you take the next step toward your future.”
