Ranking based on flexibility, faculty, curriculum quality and more

Sacred Heart University has been ranked 10th in the nation by Intelligent.com for its master’s in healthcare informatics program. Healthcare informatics uses technology to organize and analyze health records to improve health-care outcomes.

Intelligent.com, a website dedicated to ranking colleges and programs across the country using publicly available data, developed a list of the top 50 schools for its ranking. The company evaluated each of 156 accredited colleges and universities in the nation on the basis of flexibility, faculty, course strength and cost. It also considered curriculum quality, graduation rate, reputation and post-graduate employment.

SHU’s flexible healthcare informatics program has a unique online format designed for working professionals. Once enrolled, students will design solutions to the complex challenges of health information systems. They will study the trends and innovations that are shaping health care and learn about advances in patient health and electronic health records. Students will immerse themselves in the economic, cultural and technical aspects of health care and IT. They will also have the opportunity to take electives on topics such as electronic health records, database design, project management and information analysis. Most importantly, students will receive first-hand, on-the-job experience when they intern at local hospitals and health-care facilities.

An Intelligent score was then drafted for each university’s program on a scale from zero to 100. SHU earned an Intelligent Score of 91.13, placing it 10th on the list.

“It is wonderful to be recognized for our healthcare informatics program,” said Stephen Burrows, chair of healthcare informatics & administration and program director for healthcare informatics. “There’s not a lot of information about the program out there, so being ranked 10th in the nation is a great accomplishment, and I think it says a lot about the dedicated students and professors we have here at Sacred Heart.”
