Fast Track Program Offers New Three-Year Degree Option
Sacred Heart University is introducing a new fast-track program that allows undergraduate students to earn a bachelor’s degree in one of 12 accredited programs in three years. Students who enroll save time and money, allowing them to get a head start on their careers or complete an additional graduate degree in the time it usually takes to finish a traditional four-year bachelor’s program.
Fast Track programs are now offered through the College of Arts & Sciences in: biology, biochemistry, chemistry, communications, criminal justice, global studies, neuroscience, political science, psychology, psychology with a social work minor, sociology and sociology with a social work minor.
“These programs are designed for students who are motivated to complete an undergraduate degree in three years,” said Robin Cautin, dean, College of Arts & Sciences. “And pursuing a fast- track program does not preclude students from also having minors or even a second major. It is all possible with good planning and advising.”
By taking an intensive course load that includes summer work, fast-track students can save up to $40,000 in tuition and room and board costs. Students follow a specific structured curriculum that includes summer classes and may incorporate online options. Approved students may participate in service trips, study abroad programs, and other extra-curricular opportunities that are part of a well-rounded undergraduate experience.
While accelerated degree completion has been possible all along, SHU is now formalizing these pathways, intentionally scheduling courses and providing rigorous advising to fast-track students who wish to finish these fully accredited programs ahead of the traditional four-year schedule. Core curriculum courses will be offered during the summer so that students may focus on their major and minor courses during the academic year.
The fast-track program kicks off with the first dozen approved programs in fall 2020. More are scheduled to follow in the coming semesters across the University’s colleges and schools.
“There is increasing student demand for flexibility, and in response, SHU is offering more and more scheduling and delivery options,” said Cautin. “All colleges and divisions across the university are committed to meeting student needs in strategic and creative ways. The coordination and collaboration across the University has been outstanding—and, most importantly, it’s great for our students!”
