Course Placement

Students with no prior experience in the Spanish language may register for a first-semester course.

Dual Degree Program Options for Spanish Majors

Sacred Heart University’s dual degree programs provide a defined pathway for incoming freshmen to move seamlessly from an undergraduate to a graduate degree.

While some of our dual degree programs require specific undergraduate majors, others are open to almost all undergraduate disciplines. Apply to a dual degree program as an incoming freshman and you’ll have the opportunity to be admitted directly into the graduate program of your choice at the same time as your admission as an undergraduate student. Students are encouraged to reach out to your admissions counselor to discuss dual degree options.

Benefit from accelerated degree options

Spanish majors seeking to pursue a 5th-Year Masters in Education must demonstrate oral and written proficiency in Spanish by their undergraduate senior year. Students should take the ACTFL (American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Oral Proficiency Interview and the Writing Proficiency Test at the end of their junior year. If the student does not achieve a level of intermediate high in both tests, as required by the State of Connecticut, s/he must meet with an advisor and to discuss the possibility of studying abroad. Students in this situation may retake the exam during their senior year. Both exams can be taken at Sacred Heart University with one of the Spanish professors acting as proctor. For more information on these tests, check the ACTFL testing website at www.actfl.org.

Spanish majors interested in pursuing a legal career can apply to the 3+3 Bachelor’s & JD Program in conjunction with Seton Hall University. Students can earn a bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctor by completing all required credits for their degree program at Sacred Heart University within 3 years (90 credits). The balance of their undergraduate credits (30 credits) will be completed during their first year of law school at Seton Hall University.

What are my career options with a Spanish degree?

Many of our Spanish graduates obtain positions at various public school districts in southern Connecticut, including Bridgeport, Westport, Fairfield, and Newtown. A degree in Spanish will also enhance your prospects in many careers, including teaching, law, government, translation/interpretation, healthcare, business, insurance and more.

Being a Spanish major has taught me how to connect with students who have entered my classroom from diverse backgrounds. Being in the education field and now currently working with children who have special needs, I have the ability to immerse in the Spanish language and connect with other speakers. This helps me to understand the individual needs of my clients, students and their families. As diversity in our population continues to grow, it is so important to practice and immerse yourself in a second language—you never know the incredible bonds you may form. ~ Kristen Ziemer, Spanish & Psychology, '16, MAT, '17

The professors and colleagues are really the people you lean on and get to know. You are not just a “number” but rather building genuine connections in your classes. Whether its literature or global topics in the Hispanic culture, the faculty actively engage with students through conversation and technology. ~Gloria Perkins, '19
