This program and degree were previously titled Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. Sacred Heart University has updated the name to the Master of Science in Physician Associate Studies to reflect the national movement within the profession to adopt the title “physician associate.” The new title more accurately represents the advanced education, clinical training and level of responsibility held by these medical professionals and conveys the collaborative role of PAs as integral members of today’s healthcare teams.
The shift in terminology is supported by the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA), which officially adopted “physician associate” as the preferred professional title to reflect the evolving scope of practice within the field. While the transition continues across state and national organizations, all licensing, certification and accreditation standards remain unchanged. Sacred Heart’s program continues to prepare graduates to provide exceptional, patient-centered care in diverse clinical settings.

The SHU PA program has a diverse set of faculty who will prepare you in mind and in principle to be the best PA you can be. Experiencing the daily grind of school and serving alongside classmates and professors allowed me to see and know the person behind the PowerPoint. It put so much power to their words because I knew that person speaking. I knew their heart and passions. It prepared me to learn, teach and evaluate patients to the best of my ability; to both know and serve them.

I had the incredible opportunity to go to Dingle, Ireland, for my second rotation in primary care. It was an extremely valuable learning experience to study medicine in a different country, especially in a place as rural as Dingle. Certain medical tests and facilities were not as easily available. Physician assistant advocacy and education was an important part of my experience.
