Student & Alumni Testimonials
"Having the opportunity to study History at Sacred Heart was an invaluable experience in preparing me for life. The History department cultivated my love of learning. Supportive and impassioned teachers sparked the curiosity and interests within me I had yet to realize existed. I have been fortunate to work as a high school history teacher for the past ten years because of the skills I acquired at SHU. Beyond sharpening my critical thinking and research abilities the History program broadened my view of the world. I have lived in Ireland and now spend my summers teaching in remote parts of Uganda. SHU opened my eyes to what is possible. The experience I had was unparalleled. I will forever be grateful for the guidance I had during the most formative college years."

"Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine since I was in high school, but specifically I wanted to be a history teacher. What really prepared me for my teaching career was how effective the professors were in teaching their subject area. History was not shown to me from a textbook at Sacred Heart, instead the professors showed us the past through primary source documents and it was the coolest thing. Being able to see how people actually thought and functioned in the past from their own writing was what sold me on staying with history. SHU was the best choice for me because it made learning history enjoyable and creative while also pushing me to be the best version of myself possible. For any success I have as a history teacher in my career I would have to owe it to the history professors I had at SHU because of how much they cared for my success, the passion they showed in class, and for always pushing me to strive for greatness."

"I am now entering my 8th year as a history teacher at Trumbull High School in Trumbull, Connecticut. There is no doubt in my mind that the history program at Sacred Heart University did an excellent job preparing me for a career as a high school history teacher. The history classes I took at Sacred Heart prepared me very well in the areas of content knowledge, reading skills, research skills, and writing skills. Sacred Heart also shaped my interests in history by providing diverse course offerings. I took classes in Dutch History, Ancient Greece, Medieval Europe, Chinese History, Latin American History, and the American Revolution to name a few. I would recommend that anyone considering becoming a history teacher should seriously consider becoming a history major at SHU."
