Timeline
The Five-Year Course List describes the path for progressing through the Five-Year Program. Students may apply for admission to the Five-year program during their first semester sophomore year.
1st Year | Freshman
- Attend information sessions
- Secondary education students should declare a education minor through their advisor
- Work on university CORE, commit to a major, be aware of non–education course requirements
- Gain experience working with school-aged children based on the area you are interested in pursuing for education (grades 1-12)
2nd Year | Sophomore
- Sophomores should apply for admission to the Five year program in their first semester. Completed applications are due in January. Begin application preparation (work with Graduate Admission Department)
- Attend the mandatory interview with faculty
- Work on university CORE, commit to a major, be aware of non–education course requirement
- Candidates engaged in study abroad programs should either do a winter study abroad program or plan to study abroad Spring of sophomore year.
- Candidates interested in the cross-endorsement in special education should let their advisor by sophomore year
- Secondary education students should declare a education minor through their advisor (if not already completed)
- Continue gaining experience working with school-aged children based on the area you are interested in pursuing for education (grade 1-12)
3rd Year | Junior
- Begin Education courses and clinical experiences
- Candidates take Praxis II during junior year. Need to pass Praxis II prior to the student teaching semester.
4th Year | Senior
- Continue Education courses and clinical experiences
- Candidates must complete an online application for internship/residency, application to student teach, and review Plan of Study and course selection.
5th Year
A total of 39 graduate credits are required in the fifth year. Candidates will start the MAT program in May after graduation.
Summer Semesters SU1 & SU2
Students will complete a total of 21 credits.
Fall Semester
- Students will complete a total of nine credits; two MAT courses and one methods course. Permission of the dean’s office is required to attempt a fourth course.
- Residency experience in an elementary or secondary public school will begin this semester
- Apply for May Graduation
Winter Intensive (Optional)
- Students may complete a total of three MAT credits
Spring Semester
- Students will complete a total of nine credits; MAT terminal requirement (three credits) and student teaching (six credits)
- The residency experience will end at the conclusion of the school district calendar
If a candidate does not complete the BA/BS degree by May of the fourth year, his/her participation in the Five Year Program will be terminated. The candidate will be withdrawn from any Graduate Education courses in which he/she has been registered and will also be removed from their internship experience. On achieving his/her BA/BS degree, the candidate may apply to the traditional Graduate Education Program in order to complete his/her remaining teacher certification and MAT Program requirements. Assuming that the candidate has completed the prerequisite undergraduate ED courses, he/she may be able to waive certain courses within the MAT degree requirements, but he or she will still need to earn the number of credits required for the traditional Graduate Education Program. Permission for a candidate to participate in Graduate Education courses before completing his/her BA/BS degree will not be granted.
