Michael D. Herley, DBA
Michael D. Herley was appointed Assistant Professor of the Practice in Business Analytics and Information Systems (tenure track) at St. John’s University, in August 2023. This followed his previous role as a Visiting Assistant Professor. Additionally, he serves as an adjunct Doctoral Instructor, teaching Advanced Statistics & Mathematical Modeling to first-year students in the DBA in finance program at the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology.
Dr. Herley holds a DBA in finance from Sacred Heart University, an MBA in finance from St. John’s University, and an MS in mathematics from Fairfield University. His teaching approach emphasizes practical applications and meaningful results.
With over 27 years of industry experience, Dr. Herley served as a Partner at Kekst CNC on Madison Avenue until June 2019. After leaving Kekst CNC, he launched his entrepreneurial venture, Southport Strategies LLC. In March 2023, he was featured in The CEO Magazine. Notably, in May 2024, two undergraduate teams he mentored at St. John’s University for the Manhattan College Business Analytics Competition earned 1st place and a special commendation for Best Poster.
Dr. Herley's research centers on utilizing regime-switching models and machine-learning techniques to enhance time-series econometric forecasts. His current research projects explore the relationship between financial and economic variables at different levels of market risk using self-exciting threshold autoregressive and Markov-switching models.
