HI 259 THE TROUBLES IN NORTHERN IRELAND   3.0 Credit(s)
This course explores the political upheaval, civil unrest, and widespread violence that characterized the Troubles in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s through the 1990s. In addition to the conflict's long-term origins and developments, it has a wider impact on contemporary British and Irish politics. Beginning with the foundation of Northern Ireland in 1921, this course highlights key perspectives, such as unionist and nationalist, and pivotal moments like Bloody Sunday and the Hunger Strikes. It also examines the lived experience of conflict by considering the ways in which a thirty-year conflict affects not just armed combatants and politicians, but also civilians. By incorporating ideas of peacebuilding and reconciliation, students will also learn about conflict transformation and community action in contemporary conflict. The legacy of the Troubles continues to influence not just Northern Ireland, but also the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Prerequisite: Take HI-100 or HI-102 or HI-110 or HI-115
Offered: As Needed Contact Department
