TRS 135 Pilgrimages, Then & Now   3.0 Credit(s)
This course will explore the experience of religious pilgrimage in both its temporal and spiritual dimensions. In addition to learning about the origins and history of Christian pilgrimages, as "armchair pilgrims" students will consider the sacred places associated with these journeys, the "liminoid" nature of a pilgrimage, the pilgrim's intentions and sensory experiences, and the role of rituals from video recordings of spiritual journeys undertaken by Buddhist, Muslim and Christian pilgrims today. This course is organized into four modules that focus on pilgrimages to Compostela (the Camino), Jerusalem, Mecca, Mt. Kailish and Lourdes.
Offered: Late Spring Semester All Years
