Conversation Partner

Provide opportunities for social interaction between US, native English speakers and ELI students using English as the medium of communication. Support ELI students’ ability to converse comfortably in English. Improve ELI students’ understanding of U.S. social and academic culture. Assist ELI faculty members in classrooms when needed.

Location

All work for this position will be done in person, either between or after ESL classes. ESL classes run M-TH from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.. Meetings should be held between 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (lunch break) or from 3 – 4 p.m. (after class).

Responsibilities

• Commit to speaking with ELI students at least once per week, for 1 hour each time.
• Speak English clearly as it is used at the University level, motivating ELI students to contribute equally to the conversations.
• Work with the ELI faculty for suggestions and better understanding of grammar points and areas where the student may need extra help.
• Assist ELI administration during New Student Orientation and other virtual gatherings.
• Support ELI administration with small tasks related to ESL students and the department such as data entry, marketing, social media, and design of materials.
