Graphic Design Studios

Our Graphic Design Studios employ multiple large-screen monitors, table hubs and workstations for up to 16 students per classroom. Walls of designated flat files store student projects, standing worktables and whiteboards and displayed graphic design projects and posters serve as inspiration for students. 

Illustration Studio

With a wall of windows looking out on the beautiful landscape of West Campus, the Illustration Studio houses 20 industrial-grade drafting tables where the students work. A teaching station offers a large flat-screen TV for multimedia presentations and there are portable watercolor taborets and rows of flat files with ample storage for work. This studio also includes a large-format scanner for documentation and a workstation for mat cutting.

Foundation Studio

Our Foundation Studio is where introductory level drawing courses take place, as well as Design 1: Visual Organization and Design 2: Color. Equipped with dimmable overhead lights, retractable curtains and spot track lighting, this space provides optimal, easily controlled lighting for the live model or still life arrangements. Students draw on one of 16 industrial-grade drafting desks in the studio and a large collection of still life objects, including plaster casts, taxidermy animals, organic objects, machine-made objects and drapery provide inspiration. The studio is equipped with two sinks, flat files for storage and a large-format scanner for the professional documenting of work for portfolios. There is a teaching station with a large flat-screen TV for multimedia presentations.

Painting Studio

The Painting Studio’s dimmable overhead lights, spot track lighting and retractable curtains offer optimal lighting for the live model or still life arrangements in all levels of painting, as well as figure drawing courses. The studio is equipped with heavy-duty metal easels, portable taborets, drawing saddles, three sinks, as well as painting racks and flat files for storage. Portable French easels are available for plein-air painting and portable LED lights with smartphone programmable colors can be checked out for individual projects. A teaching station features a large flat-screen TV for multimedia presentations.

Printmaking Studio

With two walls of windows bringing in natural light and views of beautiful West Campus, the Printmaking Studio houses a large American French Tool Etching Press with a 36”x60” bed, a smaller Richeson etching press with an 18”x36” bed, drying racks, flat files, a screen-printing press, a laser printer, takach brayers, a heavy-duty paper cutter and three sinks. The studio supports intaglio/etching, aquatint, drypoint, monoprinting and screenprinting, as well as lino-cut, laser cut and woodblock relief printing processes.

Senior Studios

Two 10’x14’ Senior Studios are connected to the Printmaking Studio. Each semester, two Studio Art concentration students are awarded a studio for the semester, with priority given to the seniors working on their capstone thesis project that will be exhibited in the Art & Design Gallery at the Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts. The students have 24-hour access to the studios to create their work and experiment with the display of their work on the walls.

Critique Gallery

The open critique space is designated for discussion and analysis of projects from the classroom.  Critique is utilized in all studio classes and provides a chance for fellow students to engage in positive and instructive critical feedback to their peers. The gallery has an open design so that visitors can listen in on these critiques. The space is also utilized as a mini gallery/workspace on occasion.

Student Lounge & Library

With comfortable chairs, tables and a bean bag, the student lounge & library offers students space to catch up on their studies or browse books in the Art & Design Gallery.

Mac Lab

With color-coded new Apple IMacs loaded with the latest design software, The Mac Lab gives students space to explore digital design, web design, animation and motion graphics. Extra IMacs are available in the annex for students needing to catch up on projects.

Production Room

This studio houses two wall-mounted mat cutters, two laminating machines, multiple paper cutters and cutting stations for students to create and professionally present their projects.

Print Room

Our Print Room houses five Epson color printers with capabilities to create 13”x19” prints, one Epson printer that can print 24”-wide by any length and a Canon printer that can print posters 36” in width by any length. Students and faculty may check out an array of IPads, Apple Pencils, Wacom tablets, Nikon Cameras, IPhones and lighting equipment. In addition, there is a vinyl plotter that can create vinyl applications 24” wide by any length. Mike Denysenko, an Apple certified technician who teaches courses within the department, manages the Print Room.
