Chief Mutáwi Mutáhash (Many Hearts) Marilynn “Lynn” Malerba, DNP, MPA
45th Treasurer of the United States from 2022-2024
Chief Mutáwi Mutáhash (Many Hearts) Marilynn “Lynn” Malerba became the 18th chief of the Mohegan Tribe in 2010. With this lifetime appointment by the Council of Elders, she became the first woman to hold the position in modern history. Her leadership follows a family legacy of service. A registered nurse, she previously served as director of cardiology and pulmonary services at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London and as executive director of health and human services for the Mohegan Tribe. From 2022 to 2024, she served as the 45th treasurer of the United States, appointed by President Biden. She holds a doctor of nursing practice from Yale University, a master’s in public administration from UConn, and a BSN from the College of St. Joseph. Malerba has served on numerous national and tribal health and policy committees and published on Native health care issues, including in the Hastings Center Report and American Indian Health and Nursing.
