PioScholars Cohort: For Students Pursuing an MPH

Through generous funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration, this program will provide scholarship support for eligible students enrolled in the SHU MPH program as well as individuals currently working in state or local governments, including state, local, territorial or tribal public health departments, and individuals in public health-related training programs.

This groundbreaking program will enhance the public health system to meet the core public health functions and the Ten Essential Public Health Services. Scholarship recipients will gain the requisite knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, prepare for, and respond to recovery activities related to COVID-19, as well as other public health emergencies. Scholarships will provide up to $31,500 in tuition support for completion of and MPH at SHU.

Scholarship recipients will complete the accredited MPH program while committing to additional training in public health emergency preparedness, mental health first aid, and infectious disease control. These scholarship recipients will earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) from SHU.

Program requirements of PioScholar cohort scholarship recipients include:

  • Successful completion of MPH degree from Sacred Heart University
  • Certification in Contact Tracing
  • Certification in Mental Health First Aid
  • Participation in the Medical Reserve Corps
  • Academic training (coursework) in public health preparedness and emergency response
  • Mentored field work and community-based field placements
  • Admission to Sacred Heart University MPH program
  • Current US citizen or permanent resident
  • Currently in good academic standing within the MPH program

PioHealth Scholars Program – For 4+1 Combined Degree Students Earning Both a BS & MPH

This groundbreaking program will enhance the public health system to meet the core public health functions and the Ten Essential Public Health Services. Scholarship recipients will gain the requisite knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, prepare for, and respond to recovery activities related to COVID-19, as well as other public health emergencies.

This program is open to current undergraduate juniors and seniors who are committed to enrolling in the 4+1 BSHS-MPH program at Sacred Heart University. Scholarship awards of up to $20,000 tuition support for undergraduate degree completion and up to $22,500 tuition support for MPH degree completion. Scholarship recipients will be required to complete their undergraduate studies in Health Science in either the public health or global health concentration and subsequently enroll in the accredited MPH program while committing to additional training in public health emergency preparedness, mental health first aid, and infectious disease control. These scholarship recipients will earn both a BS and MPH from SHU.

  • Successful completion of both a BS in Health Sciences and an MPH degree from Sacred Heart University
  • Certification in Contact Tracing
  • Certification in Mental Health First Aid

  • Academic training (coursework) in public health preparedness and emergency response

  • Current SHU junior or senior majoring in Health Science with a concentration in Public Health or Global Health
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Admission to Sacred Heart University 4+1 BSHS-MPH program
  • Current US citizen or permanent resident
  • Currently in good academic standing within the Health Sciences program

PioPathways Program – For Undergraduate Health Science Students in the Public Health or Global Health Concentration

This groundbreaking program will enhance the public health system to meet the core public health functions and the Ten Essential Public Health Services. Scholarship recipients will gain the requisite knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, prepare for, and respond to recovery activities related to COVID-19, as well as other public health emergencies.

This program is open to undergraduate Health Science students from traditionally underrepresented, minoritized or disadvantaged backgrounds who are enrolled in the Public Health or Global Health Concentrations who are planning to attend a master's in public health program or are committed to a career in Public Health. Scholarship recipients will complete their undergraduate studies in Health Science in either the public health or global health concentration while committing to additional training in public health emergency preparedness, mental health first aid and infectious disease control. Scholarships will be awarded for up to $8,000 in tuition support for undergraduate degree completion.
