Grants & Fellowships

Jennifer Phaiah and Thomas Lee Morgan have received a combined $77,000 in grant funding from the University of Connecticut.

Kristin Rainville has been named principal investigator (PI) and Katie Cunningham in co-principal investigator (co-PI) for the Center for Connecticut Education Research Collaboration: Evaluation of Reading Curriculum Implementation, funded at $250,000.

Michael Alfano has been named an ACE Fellow for the 2023-24 cohort of the American Council on Education (ACE).

Sally Drew has been named PI for the Center for Connecticut Education Research Collaboration: Evaluation of Professional Learning Masterclass on Science of Reading, funded at $150,000.

SHU was named as one of two higher education partners for a $5.9 million federal grant the State Dept. of Education in CT (CSDE) received to improve outcomes for students with disabilities. Sally Drew and special education faculty and adjuncts will align SHU's special education curriculum and assessments to new standards for IEP quality within the state's new data system.

Awards & Honors

Frank Martignetti was at the American Choral Directors Association national conference, and named as one of conductors on the Mid-America Productions’ list of Carnegie Hall conductors for 2023-2024.

Iuliana Roata (adjunct, Literacy) was appointed director of education and artistic programs at the Honorary Consulate of Romanian to Connecticut in Hartford. She was nominated and selected among Top 100 Romanians worldwide for working on cross-border educational initiatives between CT and Romania.

Katie Cunningham's books are featured on Amazon's Hot New Release Lists. Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Upper Elementary Classroom with co-authors Jan Burkins and Kari Yates became available on Amazon and was #1 for Hot New Releases in Education, Elementary Education and Reading and Phonics.

The other book with TC Press, Reading with Purpose: Selecting and Using Children's Literature for Inquiry and Engagement, with co-authors from Lesley University, was also on the Hot New Releases for Elementary Education list on Amazon.

Kimberly Hellerich was elected as an adviser on the Connecticut COVID-19 Educational Research Collaborative (CCERC) for the Teachers’ and Leaders’ Perceptions, Turnover, and Supply Project

Rebekah Byrd was the recipient of two awards: the Ella Stephens Barrett Award, given by North Carolina Counseling Association, 2023; and the Most Improved Division Award SAIGE-NC, given by North Carolina Counseling Association, 2023. Dr. Byrd also served as a nominator, executive board member and contributor for the North Carolina Counseling Association in 2023.

In the Schools

Doctoral student Ashley Nechaev and Maureen Ruby were part of the AASA SEL Cohort team participating in a multi-day site visit in the Mineola Public Schools in Mineola, NY.

Frank Martignetti has been invited to serve as an external reviewer for the Music and Music Education majors at Salve Regina University, Newport, RI.

Frank Martignetti was invited to serve as an outside reader for a master's dissertation at North West University, South Africa.

Iuliana Roata is leading a school partnership between Stillmeadow Elementary School, Stamford, and Mark Twain International School in Bucharest, Romania. As assistant principal at Stillmeadow, she was appointed to lead the implementation of new K-5 Core Knowledge Language Arts curriculum, which includes planning, coordinating and facilitating PD to faculty.

Kara Tanner was promoted to elementary supervisor at Veterans Park Elementary School in Ridgefield.

Maureen Ruby, Deidra Preis, Joseph Polizzi are collaborating with Central Connecticut State University, the State Department of Education and CEEDAR REP, mentoring design of a elementary vocabulary project at Riverfield Elementary, in collaboration with administration and faculty.

David Title published an opinion piece in "Education Week."

Missy Wheeler and a colleague published in the NCDA web magazine on a teaching strategy they use in their classrooms. The article received more than 10,000 views in less than a week.

Grants & Fellowships

Dean Michael Alfano has been named an ACE Fellow for the 2023-24 cohort by the American Council on Education (ACE).

Joe Polizzi and Deirdra Preis received a $19,000 grant from the Collaborative for Effective Educator Development Accountability and Reform Center (CEEDAR) to develop and support equity-driven school leaders.

Kristin Rainville, David Title and Cynthia Desrochers received two small grants to support Peer Coaching in Higher Education: Faculty Coaching Partnerships to Support Rigorous, Equitable and Engaging Classrooms.

Rene Roselle and Michael Alfano secured a grant of $260,000 to continue working on the development of teacher residency clinical partnerships and redesigning the teacher education program around practice-based teacher education.

Roselle and Alfano also received a $500,000 award from the Peter and Carmen Lucia Buck Foundation to continue the transformational efforts to provide residency-based teacher preparation in the College of Education & Human Development

Sally Drew’s 2022 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Fellowship Award was transferred to Sacred Heart University. The $21,000 in funding, to be awarded through June 2024, will support the program AERA Study for Deeper Learning Fellowship in partnership with the American Institute of Research. The study’s title is “Exploring the Role of Educator Mindsets to Foster Deeper Learning Environments: A Situational Analysis Description.”

Robin Hands received an Inclusive Teaching Fellowship for 2020 from the Center of Excellence and Innovation in Teaching.

Bonnie Maur and colleagues secured BioCheMaCS, a new $1.45 million Noyce grant for secondary preservice STEM educators.

Bonnie Maur and colleagues successfully completed BIOME, a Noyce Scholars $1.2 million grant.

In the Schools

Rebekah Byrd is a virtual school counselor for NC Virtual Academy. 

Robin Hands, in conjunction with Michael Brosnan of Bridgeport Public Schools and Sarah Tropp-Pacelli of the SHU Discovery Science Center and Planetarium, created virtual clinic experiences for junior and senior teacher education candidates.

Bonnie Maur ran STEMtastic professional development for SHU students, area teachers and administrators that pivoted this year to continue as virtual monthly events with speakers including but not limited to Paige Keeley, a well-known author in education, Laurence Gartel, a well-known artist known as the Father of Digital Art, and Dr. Ashley Stroup, a systems engineer who works with the Mars Land Rover mission to name a few.

Deirdra Preis provided ongoing professional development and consulting on equity and antiracism throughout the school year for faculty and administrators from several area K-12 school districts.

Deirdra Preis provided training to students in the CT Interscholastic Athletic Conference training in social justice activism, as well as to young adults in several local communities.

René Roselle and a colleague from the Bridgeport Public Schools successfully completed year one of the Bridgeport Residency Program and are preparing for the launch of year two.

David Title is working with the Milford Public Schools to implement a new middle school schedule for fall of 2021 that will, among other changes, embed Social Emotional Learning as a permanent part of middle school students’ education.

David Title presented an overview of SHU’s Superintendent of Schools certification program to the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education in January of 2021 on how preparation programs are changing to meet today’s challenges.

Karen Waters lead SHU’s Eighth Annual Literacy Conference, held virtually on April 10, 2021. The conference was the capstone project for candidates enrolled in the CT Literacy Specialist Program.
