The Importance of a Network

Building your personal and professional network is one of the biggest benefits of a college education. Each “next step” you need to take will require you to know somebody. For example:

When you need a letter of recommendation, who will you ask?

“I needed two letters of recommendation when I applied for my current job. I got one from my academic advisor, who knew me very well, and the second from my supervisor at my internship. It was great to have two people stand up for me and talk about my abilities. It must have worked, I got the job!”

When you need an accountant or a physician, who will you call?

“As an adult, I always depend on my network when unforeseen things come up, and they always do. I moved to a new town when we bought our house, and I needed a doctor for the kids, a plumber when the pipes froze and good recommendations on places to eat, shop and hike. I got them all through the network of people I know from Sacred Heart and from my job.”

When you need an internship, who can help you?

“My network absolutely helped me get both internships when I was at Sacred Heart. A lot of my classmates were nervous about where they would find one, the interview process, and if it would be a good fit. I met a recruiter at the Welch Cup Golf Tournament from an accounting firm. After we golfed all day, he said I would be accepted to the internship program if I applied. It was that simple.”
