Students in the Jack Welch College of Business & Technology have the opportunity of being exposed to other cultures through a variety of in-class and extra-curricular options.

The administration and faculty in the college are recognizing the importance for business majors of being comfortable in a multicultural environment and are placing great emphasis on globalization. This is being accomplished by either weaving globalization in the curriculum or having students travel abroad and immerse themselves in a different business culture. The opportunities available to business majors are listed below.

Globalized Curriculum

  • Taking the specialized international/global coursework available in each business major
  • Working in multinational teams

Specialized International/Global Coursework in each Business Major

Each major in the college of business includes at least one course that specifically addresses the particularities and challenges of conducting that area of business internationally.

These courses are:

  • AC 401 Advanced Accounting for accounting majors
  • EC 322 International Economics for economics majors
  • FN 316 International Finance for finance majors
  • MGT 278 International Business for management majors
  • MK 425 International Marketing for marketing majors

Global Elective Course

MGT 280 Doing Business in China

This course offers an interdisciplinary study of essential components pertinent to doing business with China. Students will learn about the Chinese culture as well as China’s business environment. They will explore contemporary issues facing multinational firms in China including guanxi (relationship), entry strategies, supply chain management and intellectual property protection.

Study Abroad

Business majors who would like to study abroad can use the services of the university’s Global Engagement office. The Office provides eligibility criteria, information sessions, and full access to the university’s database of available study abroad programs. In order to study abroad, business majors have to meet the eligibility criteria required of all Sacred Heart University students.

Students may opt to study abroad in one of two types of programs:

  • SHU or SHU-affiliated program
  • Approved non-affiliated program

Some of the benefits of attending SHU programs (versus attending a non-affiliated) are:

  • Ease of credit transfers
  • Ease of financial aid transfer
  • Knowledgeable staff and support of the Global Engagement

Take a General Requirements Course Abroad

Students may opt to take a general requirements course abroad through programs offered by the Office of Global Affairs.

Take a Business Course Abroad

The WCBT offers a number of courses at our Dingle global campus, as well as faculty-led programs such as Fashion Merchandising & Management classes each summer in Paris and Milan and short-term classes in India and China.
