Seminars in the Health Professions
The Sacred Heart Pre-Health Advisement Program offers students the opportunity to participate in two health seminars run each year by the Directors of the Pre-Health Advisement Program.
Seminar in the Health Professions | BI 190
This course is intended for freshman and sophomores who are pursuing a career in the health professions. The goal of this class is to “EXPLORE”. Considerable time will be afforded to exploring which graduate paths may be most aligned with your own values, abilities and interests. We will discuss finding a balance between pre-health requirements and other academic and extracurricular goals.
The class will meet once a week for seminar discussions and relevant weekly online work will be assigned, such as reflection journals, narrative writing, and preparation of in-class presentations. Students will hear from invited speakers such as alumni at different points in their health profession careers, admission directors of different schools from the various health professions, and coordinators of programs that provide extracurricular clinical opportunities. During this course, 4 core competencies will be emphasized: teamwork, social skills, oral communication, and written communication.
Advanced Seminar in the Health Professions | BI 191
This course is intended for Juniors and Seniors pursuing a career in the health professions. The goal of this class is to “PREPARE”. This class will offer a once-weekly seminar in which students will receive guidance on creating both their CV and personal statements, through the process of seminar discussions based on scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and service orientation. In addition, discussions will include advice on course selections that are required for different schools, any relevant revisions to the course offerings at SHU, and the timing of registration for courses in relation to exams such as the MCAT, DAT, OAT, PharmCAT or GRE exam.
Students enrolled in BI-191 will benefit from listening to invited speakers, such as alumni at different points in their health profession careers, admission directors of different schools and coordinators of programs that provide extracurricular clinical opportunities. Students are encouraged to ask questions and get feedback from invited speakers, thereby enhancing their own personal insight of the application cycle, the admission process, life as a graduate student, and work/life balance upon graduation.
