New Student Checklist
As a new student, you're bound to have questions about starting at Sacred Heart University – you know you're accepted, but what's next?
Your New Student Checklist helps you stay organized, ensuring the completion of everything required before, during and after orientation.
You will not be able to access your New Student Checklist until you have set up your email account.
You can log into your Orientation Account to view your personalized new student checklist on the "Task list" page. Be sure to check in often to view your progress of your required items in your Orientation Account. Please note, it may take 2-3 business days for your items to be checked off as completed.
If you have any questions, feel free to email us at orientation@sacredheart.edu.
Getting Started
You will be able to activate your SHU email account once you receive an activation notice through your personal email, which you will need to begin this process. It is important to check your SHU email consistently as all communication moving forward will be sent to your SHU email. After you activate your email account, it may take up to 24 hours for you to access your email.
Your academic questionnaire and course ranking will allow us to create your academic schedule. After this is completed, you will be able to select a date to attend Orientation and register guest(s). This should take about 15 minutes to complete.
To receive your SHUCard at Orientation, submit a photo that meets the criteria. If your photo does not meet the requirements, you will receive an email explaining why your photo was not approved.
Students must activate their SHU email account before proceeding with this step. All incoming first-year students are required to take the math placement exam. Please set aside uninterrupted time to complete the math placement exam. In addition, the foreign language placement exam is to be completed if applicable.
The Fundamentals
Your Orientation Leader will reach out to you the day before your session! Be sure to check your SHU email for event updates and reminders. We are so excited to meet you!
In order to complete your Student Accounts requirements, all students must establish a tuition payment plan. Fall statements will be published online and mailed home the week of May 27 with a July 1 pay-in-full due date. Payment Plan enrollment is not a requirement, but it certainly is an option. Enrollment window will open the week of May 27, with scheduled payments to occur on July 1, August 1, September 1, October 1 and November 1. Health Insurance waiver opportunities will begin May 22, with an absolute deadline of August 1. Failure to complete these requirements will result in a hold or block on your account.
Resident students should visit the Residential Life page for more information, roommate selection, Living & Learning Communities, deadlines, frequently asked questions and more. Detailed information on the housing portal will be sent to your SHU email account.
The University requires your health care provider to complete health forms to comply with Connecticut State Law regarding student immunizations. For more information, visit the Heath Services website. Failure to submit your health forms and immunization will result in a block on your account and prohibit you from moving in.
Students who are considering disclosing a disability to the University in order to request accommodations, auxiliary aids or services must complete an online request via the online portal.
The Pre-Orientation Videos will help you as you prepare for Orientation. These videos will be available in your Orientation account mid-May.
Log into MySHU. Go to Student Planning & Advising. Under User Options on the left hand side, add Emergency Information.
A Chosen Name may be different from a person’s Legal Name. There are many reasons why someone may use a Chosen Name, such as a reflection of gender identity, as a nickname or as a westernized or Americanized name.
All Roads Lead to SHU
The Drug & Alcohol eCheckup program will provide you with personalized information about your drinking habits and supply information about resources available to you at SHU and in the surrounding community.
The Sexual Assault Prevention Training course will provide information and skills for fostering healthy relationships and help prepare you to recognize and respond to sexual assault and harassment when it occurs.
This training (available on Blackboard under Organizations) is designed for you to start asking questions to better understand how you came to your beliefs and how they impact and inform your views of today’s changing world.
If you have a question about this step, contact your admissions counselor.
SHU IT is looking to protect students from potential phishing attacks that they may receive to their accounts. This training will review modules including:
- A Student's Guide to Avoid Online Scam
- Phishing Reinforcements for Students: So you clicked. Now what?
- How To Use the Phish Alert Button for Microsoft 365
Begin your training. Students should enter their SHU email address and they will be directed to the Sacred Heart University training. Students can then select training in the top navigation.
PathwayU is a resource provided by the Center for Career & Professional Development to help you match your interests with a major and career path. Students are encouraged to get a head start and complete all four modules to identify interests, values, personality traits and workplace preferences.
