Stephen T. Bowers Scholarship
About the Scholarship
The Stephen T. Bowers Memorial Scholarship was created in 2015 by Stephen's wife, Dr. Donna Bowers. While undergoing treatment for cardiac myopathy and awaiting a heart transplant, 'Steve' received the most compassionate and excellent care by nurses and physical therapists at Yale New Haven Hospital. To honor those caregivers and inspire future caregivers, this scholarship recognizes a graduating physical therapy student and a graduating nursing student who are pursuing clinical practice in the area of cardiology.

"SHU is my home away from home. I fell in love with campus the moment I stepped onto it for my first tour. SHU provides so many opportunities for fun and success and offers the students the best education possible. I have accepted a position as a registered nurse at Yale New Haven Hospital on a cardiac unit. Sacred Heart has helped me achieve this goal of working at Yale by not only preparing me to be an excellent nurse, but also by preparing me to be a well-rounded individual. I plan to go back to school in a year or two for my doctorate degree as an APRN. I am a member of Phi Sigma Sigma, which has connected me with women who I will be friends with forever. It gave me a great community on campus. I studied abroad in Dingle, Ireland for two weeks. It was two of the best weeks of my life and I highly recommend it to any student. I am so incredibly honored to receive this scholarship. It feels so good to be recognized for my interest in cardiac nursing. Receiving this scholarship makes me that much more excited to use the skills I've learned through SHU nursing to care for and comfort patients who are suffering from cardiac disease. I truly thank you so much again for choosing me to be the recipient. I will represent the name of this scholarship extremely well!"

"What I love most about SHU is the relationship that teachers have with their students. Teachers are always open and available and treat you more like a friend and a colleague than anything else! I want to help people live a happy and healthy life. Majoring in Physical Therapy at SHU has given me the tools I need to achieve this goal! I enjoyed traveling to Guatemala on the PT Service learning trip and working as an Anatomy Lab GA. There are no words for me to explain what this scholarship means to me. The amount of passion and emotion I have related to this scholarship cannot be put into words. I know that this scholarship will remind me everyday that there are people that believe in me and know that I can do great things for this patient population! Thank you for believing in me!"
