About the Endowed Scholarship
The CT Challenge "Chris Cook" Endowed Scholarship For Cancer Survivors was created in 2016 in memory of Chris Cook, who passed away on April 14, 2014 after battling cancer heroically for two years. Chris is the son of Don Cook, Athletic Director Emeritus of Sacred Heart University. Chris was a former college athlete, an accomplished corporate vice-president, and a loving husband and father. His story was one of hope aligned with a special brand of courage and determination. This scholarship is awarded to students who are cancer survivors or currently battling cancer. This scholarship requires an additional application, which must be submitted to the Office of Financial Assistance. The scholarship will be renewed annually to qualified students.

Matthew Abati '19
Hometown: Wallingford, CT
Major: Exercise Science
"I work at a gym training kids and adults with mental disabilities and a horticultural business that employs adults with mental/physical disabilities. I love learning about the health and wellness field because it helps me to better myself as a trainer and it helps me help others. Any form of financial aid is always appreciated immensely, especially after medical bills are added onto the already astronomical cost of education. As someone who wants to be able to give back one day I would tell [my scholarship donor] how forever grateful I will be for this scholarship, not just for the money, but for the love, support, compassion, and the message of giving that this donor has shown me that will stick with me forever."

"My favorite thing about SHU is is the friends I have made and my wonderful professors. My professional goals are to graduate with my doctorate and then become a Philosophy professor. I am a member of the theater program, the sorority, Chi Omega, and participate in community service with churches and schools. Thank you for providing me with this scholarship. You are an inspiring human being and your scholarship helps me achieve my dreams."

"As a nursing major I hope to become a pediatric oncology nurse after graduation. My drive for this career comes from my own experience with cancer at a young age. I hope to be able to help children and families going through such a difficult time. I am a proud member of the Chi Omega sorority at SHU. It has given me opportunities to grow as a person both inside and outside of the classroom, and I have met women who challenge me to be a better person every day. I can't thank you enough for this scholarship. I have so many goals and aspirations and you truly have no idea how much this scholarship is going to help me."
