Horizons
Horizons envisions a future where every child thrives. The SHU chapter of a national nonprofit organization, Horizons at Sacred Heart University (HSHU) is a tuition-free organization that provides academic and recreational enrichment programming to low-income Bridgeport students in grades K-8. HSHU works to advance educational equity by building longterm partnerships with Bridgeport families and schools to create experiences that inspire the joy in learning. Robust programming runs throughout the year. School year programming provides mentorship, homework support and tutoring. Summer programming provides an immersive academic and enrichment experience. These opportunities put students on more equitable footing with their middle-income peers.
Summer learning loss, or the “summer slide,” is a known phenomenon that is particularly prevalent among low-income youth. In Bridgeport, like in many communities plagued by economic inequality and poverty, access to summer educational opportunities can make or break a child’s success and preparedness for the upcoming school year.
HSHU’s summer academic curriculum has a strong emphasis on literacy, STEM, creative arts, and social emotional learning (SEL). SEL leads to better decisionmaking by cultivating awareness, communicating emotions and building relationships. Additionally, HSHU provides access to interest-driven classes including cooking, art, music, sports and swimming.

Supporting Children Changes the World
Horizons at Sacred Heart University creates a ripple effect throughout the community. Investing in the education and development of children uplifts families and allows the Pioneer Spirit to come alive in a powerful partnership. Through Now We Lead, you can strengthen HSHU by:
Securing more scholarships for students
It costs approximately $5,000 to fund one Horizons student for one year. By investing in scholarships for one or more students, you will help guarantee our ability to serve 175 students over many years and amplify our impact in the community.
Attracting more multiyear pledges
HSHU makes a long-term commitment of nine years to every child—we seek donors who can match this level of commitment in making multiyear pledges. We’re proud to report that nearly 95% of our students come back year after year. By making a multiyear gift, you can ensure that we have enough resources to provide high-quality programming and activities.
Developing a corporate and business program
Through the campaign, we aim to raise awareness of HSHU by partnering with local businesses to fund our programming, commit to our students and empower the next generation of business owners and entrepreneurs in Bridgeport.
